Acrobat Reader® and computer performance

In some cases viewing pdf files with Acrobat Reader® from within a web browser can slow a system down or even freeze it. To prevent this from happening you might want to change Acrobat Reader® to open as a helper application in a separate window. Please follow the instructions below to do so:

For Acrobat Reader® 4.0:

  • 1.Start Acrobat Reader® from the Windows Start > Programs menu (not from your browser!).
  • 2.From the menu bar choose File > Preferences > General.
  • 3.Deselect Web Browser Integration in the section Options, then click OK.
  • 4.Exit the program.
  • 5.The next time you follow a link to a pdf file Acrobat Reader® should open in a separate window.

For Acrobat Reader® 5.0:

  • 1.Start Acrobat Reader® from the Windows Start > Programs menu (not from your browser!).
  • 2.From the menu bar choose Edit > Preferences.. and click Options on the left hand side.
  • 3.Deselect Display PDF in Browser and then click OK.
  • 4.Exit the program.
  • 5.The next time you follow a link to a pdf file Windows might ask you what to do with the file. Choose one of the two options.
  • 6.If Acrobat Reader® asks you if you'd like the configuration to be fixed choose "No". To prevent this message from coming up again, deselect "Always perform this check when Acrobat is starting".
